Status of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park topic at next Lunch with the League

lwv_logoCassius Cash, Superintendent of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) will give his perspective on the status of the Park at the next Lunch with the League on Tuesday, January 5. The community is invited. The program will be held at 12 noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Cash took over the helm of the nation’s busiest national park in February 2015. More than 10 million visited the park in 2014, which was an 8 percent increase from 2013. GSMNP encompasses a half-million rugged, remote acres on the North Carolina-Tennessee border. The popular refuge for hikers, backpackers, and nature lovers is also a huge economic driver for the region. Visitors spent nearly $807 million in communities near the park, and locally supported nearly 13,000 jobs.

Before assuming his new post, Cash served as superintendent for Boston National Historical Park and Boston African American National Historic Site. “We are excited to have Cassius joining our Southeast Region leadership team,” said National Park Service Southeast Regional Director Stan Austin. “He has a great reputation as a leader and has proven his ability to effectively work with partners, stakeholders, and local communities. We know that he will be an excellent steward of the Smokies, one of the crown jewels of the Southeast Region.”

Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, Lunch with the League is open to the public. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed. Box lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis for $8, or you may bring your own. Coffee and tea are provided.
