John Thomas Harvey, Oliver Springs

John Thomas Harvey, age 64, passed away at UT Medical Center on October 19, 2020 after a brief illness.  Born on December 30, 1955, he was the third child of the late Claude Smith “Sonny” Harvey Jr. and Maxine Brown Harvey. John graduated from Oliver Springs High School and went on to Tennessee Tech  University where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. While taking his college courses, John also became certified as an Emergency Medical Technician and worked for the Putnam & Anderson County Ambulance Services. He graduated in 1977 with a degree in Business Management.

John returned home and began working full-time at Harvey’s Furniture and Appliance. Following in his father’s footsteps, John managed all the day-to-day operations. John was a member of the Oliver Springs Police Department/Auxiliary for 41 years and a faithful member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

A lifelong resident of Oliver Springs, John was always civic-minded. From Eagle Scout projects to being a member of the volunteer fire department, John was always helping his beloved community. Most of the students from the local school knew Mr. Harvey from his time working security for all the sporting events. In his later years, John was a member of the Roane County 911 Emergency Board. When his community needed him, he consistently answered the call.
