TVA votes to retire Bull Run

The TVA Board of Directors voted unanimously Thursday in Chattanooga to retire the Bull Run Fossil Plant in Claxton by the end of 2023 and the Paradise Fossil Plant Unit #3 in Kentucky by the end of 2020.

Bull Run is the only single-generator coal-fired power plant in the TVA system and employs approximately 100 people.

TVA has been working to scale back its existing coal plants and move ahead with other sources of energy production. In recent years, the TVA has shut down more than 30 of its 59 coal-fired units, including two Paradise units in recent years.  In a tweet, TVA said they will work with impacted employees and communities during the shutdown process.

TVA says the decision was made after extensive reviews and public comments. They say they will work with affected employees and communities.
