MEDIC Issues Urgent Call for O-Negative Blood Donors

MEDIC Regional Blood Center is asking eligible O-negative donors to give blood as soon as possible after recent trauma cases reduced its inventory to less than a two-day supply.

MEDIC says blood already on the shelves is what hospitals use during emergencies. Because donated blood requires at least three days to be processed and prepared for distribution, officials say donations are urgently needed to stabilize the supply.

Several donor incentives are available this week:

  • Through Wednesday, September 23, donors will be entered to win floor seats to Thursday’s Ella Langley concert.
  • Through Friday, September 25, donors will be entered to win one of 50 pairs of Dollywood tickets.
  • On Friday, donors will receive a special-edition Dolly Parton-themed “9 to 5” shirt while supplies last.

Donors may also skip their promotional gift, and MEDIC will donate $5 to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for each gift declined during September and October.

All O-negative donors are automatically enrolled in MEDIC’s O-Negative Loyalty Program and may receive electronic gift cards based on the number of donations they have made since the program began on May 1.

Donations can be made at MEDIC donor centers or mobile blood drives. Appointments are encouraged but not required. Locations and appointment information are available at medicblood.org.

MEDIC supplies blood products to 24 hospitals and medical transport services across 23 counties in East Tennessee and Southeastern Kentucky.
