(Submitted) Oak Ridge, Tennessee —- Greta Ownby, long time Oak Ridger and community leader, has announced her candidacy for Oak Ridge City Council in the November 3rd General Election.
Ownby is a graduate of Oak Ridge High School having attended Glenwood and Linden Elementary Schools and Robertsville Junior High School. She holds a B.A. in Organizational Communications from the University of Central Florida. Her numerous professional achievements and activities include: directing the Leadership Oak Ridge program, achieving her Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) status, connecting business owners to opportunities and organizing a multitude of community-focused events.
Over the years, Ownby has served on numerous government and non-profit boards, commissions and committees in the Oak Ridge area. Since January 2021, she has been a member of the Oak Ridge Planning Commission. Currently, she is the chair of the newly formed Oak Ridge Arts, Culture and History Alliance Advisory Board. In addition, Ownby is on the Board of Directors for Community Mediation Services as Treasurer and has completed the necessary training to be a mediator through the program.
With decades of community involvement, Ownby is uniquely qualified to serve and lead Oak Ridge as a member of City Council. Ownby stated, “My commitment to Oak Ridge is evidenced by many years of involvement in our community. As a member of City Council, my pledge to the citizens of Oak Ridge is that I will fairly evaluate all decisions that come before the council. My belief is that the most effective elected officials govern with their heart and their mind.”
Ownby added, “A community is strong and healthy when there is balance. Business development, residential, arts and culture, outdoor amenities, transportation, education, community services and more play roles in the balancing act toward having a strong and healthy community. No one area of focus should overshadow others.”
Ownby and her husband Jim, a service-disabled veteran small business owner, have two sons and two grandchildren.
