OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. — The 19th Annual October Sky Festival will bring a day of history, entertainment, shopping and family fun to Oliver Springs on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Admission to the festival is free.
What began as a celebration of Oliver Springs and its connection to the 1999 film “October Sky” has grown into one of the community’s largest annual events. The movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper and Laura Dern, was partially filmed in Oliver Springs.
The festival has continued to grow each year, attracting more than 140 vendors and an estimated attendance of over 6,000 people at recent events.
Arrowhead Park will serve as the center of festival activities, featuring arts and crafts vendors, food, children’s activities, live music and entertainment for visitors of all ages.
The festival also celebrates the rich and varied history of Oliver Springs, a community first settled in 1821. The town initially became known for the mineral springs believed to offer health benefits. Its first resort hotel was constructed in 1873, followed by the 150-room Oliver Springs Hotel, which became a nationally known destination before it was destroyed by fire in 1905.
Coal mining later became a major source of employment and helped shape the community’s identity. During World War II, many Oliver Springs residents also found work in the nearby secret city of Oak Ridge as part of the Manhattan Project.
Festival visitors are encouraged to tour the Oliver Springs Historical Society Museum, which will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The restored building has served the community in many ways over the years, including as an automobile garage, bus station, theater, bowling alley, church meeting place and snack bar.
Today, the museum includes a meeting room, a 100-seat theater and stage, coal-mining artifacts, historical displays and a walk-through recreation of the streets and businesses of Oliver Springs’ past. Second-floor exhibits offer visitors another glimpse into everyday life during earlier generations.
The October Sky Festival brings these chapters of Oliver Springs history together with music, entertainment, community pride and ongoing efforts to preserve the town’s Victorian homes and historic character.
The festival will be held Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Arrowhead Park and the Oliver Springs Historical Society Museum.
