John E. Burgess, 83

With heavy heart and profound sadness, we announce the passing of John E. Burgess, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. John was a long time resident of the Powell/Claxton area. He was born on April 15, 1943 and departed this world peacefully at home on August 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his cherished family.

John was the devoted son of the late John H. Burgess and Frankie Lucille Burgess (Scates). He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Tommy and Gary as well as a host of half-siblings who also meant a great deal to him. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Charlotte with whom he shared a lifetime of love and happiness since they were wed on December 1, 1963. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home raising four children who were the joy of their lives.

John is also survived by his loving children; Tammie (Ralph), Theresa (Chris), John (Brooke), James D. (Jessi). He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and held immense joy of welcoming one great-grandchild into the world.

A man of remarkable character and kindness, John dedicated his life to the Lord, his family and his work spending many years in the construction industry. His journey began with woodworks and carpentry eventually leading to operating heavy equipment. He was a hardworking man who provided for his family with unwavering dedication and integrity.

John’s passions extended beyond his career. In his early years, he delighted in the tranquility of the great outdoors, often found fishing, camping or tending to his garden. Later in life, he took great pleasure in BBQs, where his infectious laughter and jovial spirit made every gathering memorable.

Those who knew John remember him as a fun-loving soul, a man of quiet strength and generosity. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and shared his warmth with everyone he met. A man of modest means, he lived a life rich in love placing God and his family at the center of everything he did. Though he cherished travel, his heart was always at home nestled beside Charlotte, the love of his life.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on August 20, 2026 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the Funeral Service following at 7:00 p.m. at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, located at 621 S. Charles G. Seivers Blvd, Clinton, TN 37716. John will be laid to rest at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens Friday, August 21, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with a procession beginning at Holley-Gamble at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, honoring John’s memory and his courageous battle.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at the Tennessee Cancer Center in Powell, the compassionate doctors and nurses at Tennova North Hospital, particularly Dr. Alexander and the attentive nursing staff on the 5th floor, Dr. Griffith and his staff at the Summit Medical Group for the exceptional care and dignity they provided, as well as Allee’s Vision Optometry (Michael Allee) and Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun (Jake McMillin) for allowing John to be able to see his family a few weeks prior to his passing.

John’s family also expresses deep appreciation to all the friends, neighbors and loved ones who offered unwavering support during this difficult time. Your presence and kindness brought comfort to John and his family and for that, they are eternally grateful.

John Burgess’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his spirit will forever guide and inspire his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
