A man is in custody at the Roane County Detention Facility after authorities say he led law enforcement on an overnight pursuit that began with a Tennessee Highway Patrol traffic stop involving a tractor-trailer.
According to Roane County Sheriff-elect and current Chief Deputy Tim Phillips, the suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Trevor Wayne Helton, who remained in custody Tuesday without bond at the Roane County Jail.
Authorities are still working to determine the exact location where the Tennessee Highway Patrol initially attempted to stop the tractor-trailer. Investigators say the driver refused to stop, leading troopers on a pursuit before officers were able to deploy spike strips. The chase came to an end near the industrial park on the eastern end of Roane County, close to the Roane-Loudon County line.
After bringing the tractor-trailer to a stop, the driver reportedly fled on foot, prompting a large-scale overnight search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Chief Deputy Phillips said officers searched throughout the night for the suspect. At approximately 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Roane County Sheriff’s Office Detective Greg Scalf spotted Helton. Deputies from the Roane County Sheriff’s Office, along with troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and deputies from the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, responded and took Helton into custody without incident.
Helton was transported to the Roane County Detention Facility, where he was being processed as of midday.
The reason for the original traffic stop has not yet been released. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and is expected to announce the charges filed against Helton, along with additional details about the incident.
