OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Residents in and around Oak Ridge will have the opportunity to learn more about potential compensation related to historic radiation exposure at a free informational event on Tuesday, May 19 at The Courtyards Senior Living.
The event, titled “What is RECA?”, will focus on the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and who may qualify for benefits. It will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., with food and drinks served at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Guest speaker Amelia Crotwell, a Certified Elder Law Attorney, will lead the session and explain eligibility requirements, the claims process, and available compensation.
Individuals who lived, worked, or attended school for at least two years after Jan. 1, 1949, in certain local ZIP codes may qualify. These include 37710, 37716, 37719, 37748, 37763, 37769, 37828, 37829, 37830, 37831, 37840, 37845, 37854, and 37887.
Those diagnosed with specific cancers — including leukemia, thyroid, lung, breast, colon, liver, and brain cancers — could be eligible for compensation of $50,000 or more, while surviving family members of deceased individuals may qualify for $25,000.
The deadline to file a claim is Dec. 31, 2027, making it important for potentially eligible residents to learn more about their options.
