OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — A multi-million-dollar paving project is moving forward in Oak Ridge, with city leaders approving more than $3.2 million in road work aimed at improving streets across the community.
The project will focus on repairing and resurfacing roads in multiple areas of the city, including major corridors and residential neighborhoods.
City officials say the work is being done in phases, beginning with targeted repairs to damaged sections of roadway. Crews will address issues beneath the surface—such as failing road base and problem spots—before applying new asphalt.
That approach is designed to help extend the life of the pavement and prevent future problems.
Areas expected to see work include portions of:
- Illinois Avenue
- Oak Ridge Turnpike
- Robertsville Road
- East Division Road
- Several neighborhood streets across the city
In addition, a separate paving project will focus on school zones, improving safety with resurfacing, striping, and shoulder repairs near local schools.
Looking Ahead to 2027
City leaders say this year’s work is just the first step in a larger, multi-year plan.
The repairs underway now are expected to lead directly into a larger, multi-million-dollar resurfacing project in 2027, where many of these same streets will receive full asphalt overlays.
By completing the base repairs first, officials say the city can ensure that next year’s paving project will be more durable and cost-effective over time.
The paving work is expected to span several months, with activity continuing through this year and possibly into the fall, depending on weather and scheduling.
